Limiting bird damage: an innovative luminous deterrent

Bird protection laser crops

Bird attacks represent a major challenge for many farmers. To tackle this problem, the installation of a self-contained laser scarecrow is an effective and sustainable solution. It uses a green light beam, projected towards the area to be protected. Birds perceive the laser as a physical threat and fly away. This solution entails no danger to them or to the environment.

A growing threat to crops

Over the years, bird pressure on crops has increased sharply. At EARL de l'Horizon, in the Charentes region of France, agriculture and innovation go hand in hand. A variety of species are grown, and Mr. Daniau devotes a quarter of his plots to experimentation.

Over the past five years, some plots have suffered heavy attacks, particularly from goshawks, leading to up to 40% losses on soybean seedlings.

Popcorn has not been spared, with depredations exceeding 30% losses, sometimes requiring complete reseeding to compensate for the damage.

"The first part of the test was carried out on a 22-hectare plot of maize and no damage was found.

This plot is attacked every year by pigeons and the LZT1000 laser protected it completely."

The impact of autonomous laser on crop protection

The installation of an autonomous and intuitive LazerTrac® LZT1000 bird deterrent has revolutionized the protection against unwanted birds.

Placed between two plots of 12 and 22 hectares, the system protected popcorn maize fields, soybeans, as well as test plots of peanuts and dry beans.

From the moment it was deployed, the results were significant: the bird population dropped from hundreds of individuals to only a few occasional sightings of crows or rooks.

The laser’s effectiveness remained consistent over the long term. Unlike other methods that may lose efficiency due to bird habituation, light-based deterrence maintained its impact.

A key observation was even made: as soon as the laser was moved to another plot, the birds immediately returned, confirming both the pressure exerted by the birds on these areas and the crucial role of the LazerTrac® LZT1000 in crop protection.

Why should you use a laser bird deterrent?

Farmers who have tested this technology highlight several concrete benefits:

  • Immediate effectiveness: birds quickly leave the protected areas.
  • Long-lasting protection: no signs of reduced efficiency over time.
  • The system helps improve yields by reducing crop losses.
  • Finally, it is a relevant alternative to chemical or noise-based methods.

Laser bird deterrents are emerging as an innovative and cost-effective solution for farms. Thanks to this technology, it is now possible to efficiently protect crops and optimize yields without harming the environment.
